West Bottoms
In an effort to re-create a sense of place in the dilapidated West Bottoms of Kansas City, MO, several sites were selected and students were tasked with the theory of placemaking and placekeeping at each site.

The West Bottoms is a post-industrial area located west of downtown Kansas City, MO. Once the heart of Kansas City through it’s industrial commodities, the area has since become mostly abandoned but still full of opportunity. This 5th year studio project focused on placemaking and adding life back into currently unused spaces. Through several public meetings and collaboration with local artists, the studio developed ideas for 4 different sites. The images below are part of the Central Viaduct site development which features modular seating, a unique drainage system that also incorporates site lighting, as well as re-using the viaduct and surrounding site walls for framed placekeeping.
2017
Scarritt Renaissance
After a comprehensive study of the entire Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood, students were asked to select a site and design a building, or a series of buildings, to enhance the urban fabric of the neighborhood.

Scarritt Renaissance is a well established neighborhood in Northeast Kansas City, MO. As a 5th year fall studio project, the goal was to create a plan to infill existing vacancies to revitalize the urban fabric of the area. Through neighborhood analysis and stakeholder feedback, the following project images are one of the solutions we came up with. The main project was a laundry and bar combo on the ground level with studio apartments above addressing the lack of community services and affordable housing.
2016
Italian Study Abroad
Kansas State University has a reciprocal study abroad program in Orvieto, Italy. Students left their computers at home and went back to hand drawing with Prof. Peter Magyar. The following images are from a project in a local piazza where students were told to design an infill piece between existing buildings. The last couple images are of a book Prof. Magyar wrote - Palladian Space-Neurons and other roots of infinity - which hosted several student drawings from this time in Italy.
